Questions
How can I book?
Get in touch, we have a chat, and if it feels right a £250 deposit secures your date. I send over the contract and the questionnaire and we start creating.
How do I pay?
A £250 deposit secures your date when you book. The remaining balance is then split into two equal payments: the first is due when your first draft is ready to be sent, and the second eight weeks before the big day. That way the cost is spread across the planning rather than landing all at once.
Where do you travel?
I'm based in Northampton and happy to travel. Travel time is charged at £10 per hour of travel to and from your venue. If your package includes a rehearsal and the venue is more than two and a half to three hours away, an overnight stay is added.
Why should we do it if it's not legal?
Because it's still your real wedding. The register office part is a short administrative step, currently under £172 all in. Your celebrant ceremony is where you exchange your personal vows, tell your story and celebrate with no restrictions on time, location or content. In England and Wales you can't yet do the legal bit with a celebrant, but the law is being reformed. Think of it this way: the registrar is signing the paperwork for the house. The celebrant ceremony is the housewarming, with everyone you love in the room.
Where can we have the ceremony?
Anywhere. A barn, a woodland, your back garden, a castle, a beach, a tipi. There are no licensing rules for a celebrant ceremony, so the venue is wherever you want it.
Can we include people and pets?
Please do. Readings and blessings from family and friends, a sing-along, a pet ring bearer (all up for dog cuddles). If you share a tradition or hobby, we turn it into little rituals throughout.
What makes you different?
I don't work from a template. We start with a blank page and zero limits, and I write a story about your journey. It's personalised, it's punchy, and I'm a little quirky, which helps.
Is it more expensive to have two ceremonies?
Not by much. The register office part is the short statutory option, currently under £172 all in for notices, room hire and the schedule, though the exact figure depends on your local council and its fees. The celebrant ceremony is the one you pay properly for, and it's the one you're far more likely to enjoy: personal, written around you, and shared with the people you love. Bonus: two anniversaries.
Can we write our own vows?
Please do. Quill & Kiss includes a vow-writing help book and a review if you want one, and I'm happy to give prompts and examples on any package. If you'd rather I wrote them with you, we can do that too.
We have no idea what we want. Can you help?
Yes, that's most couples. The questionnaire does the heavy lifting. From your answers I'll suggest rituals and a shape for the ceremony, and we tweak it together until it feels like you.
Can you include religious or spiritual elements?
Yes. As an independent celebrant I'm not bound by rules on content, so a hymn, a blessing, a prayer or a tradition from either family can sit alongside everything else. Equally, you can have none of that.
How long will the ceremony last?
Usually 25 to 40 minutes, depending on how many readings, rituals and guests get involved. If timing matters for your venue or your photographer, tell me and we'll plan to it.
Do you do LGBTQ+ weddings?
Of course. Love is love, and every ceremony is written for the people in it. No assumptions, no expectations. If I ever say or do something that doesn't sit right, tell me and I'll fix it.
What's included in the price, and what isn't?
Each package lists exactly what's in it on the packages page. The only extras are travel time, an overnight stay if a rehearsal is more than two and a half to three hours away, and props for rituals if you'd like me to source them.
Our family dynamics are complicated. Can you help us navigate that?
Yes. Tell me what's going on and we'll plan around it: who's mentioned, who isn't, where people sit, who speaks. I'll keep checking in, and on the day I'll handle it quietly so you don't have to.
Will you travel abroad for a destination wedding?
Happily. We agree travel and accommodation up front so there are no surprises, and the planning works just the same over video calls.
Do you only do weddings?
Weddings and vow renewals are my focus. If you have something else in mind, a naming day or an anniversary celebration, ask and we'll see if it's a fit.
What's the difference between an independent celebrant and a humanist celebrant?
A humanist celebrant leads non-religious ceremonies only. As an independent celebrant I can include religious, spiritual or cultural elements, or none. Neither can currently conduct the legal marriage in England and Wales, so both involve the quick register office step.
